In the past they have been referred to, as a well kept secret. Now they seem to be everywhere. While they have become a standard part of virtually every major team’s arsenal of weapons, they are still not fully understood. One of the biggest questions being, how do I choose the right coatings?

When you hear terms like, matrix, zirconia, polymer, plasma spray, ion impingement, fluoropolymer, thermo set, catalyzed ECT. It is confusing. To the average individual these terms are barely understandable. Is it even possible to make a wise choice? The answer is YES!

The first key to understanding is to recognize that you do not need to fully understand the chemistry or application method to benefit, any more than you need to understand how a bearing is produced or what aluminum is used in your pistons. This information can be beneficial if you are into the actual chemistry and physics involved to run at the edge, but for most individuals other things are of more concern.

Actually, selecting coatings is done in basically the same way that you decide to purchase any other part. You look to see what others are using, you talk to those that have used it and you may call the manufacturer for additional information.

Here is a second problem that comes into play. There are literally thousands of coatings used in the Aerospace industrial field. How do you pick the right one? Some companies are making use of coatings that were not designed for the automotive environment, and while they have shown some benefits, they have not been consistent. After all, which coating would you prefer? A coating designed to keep eggs from sticking to a frying pan or one designed to keep your pistons from sticking?
